17. Revelations

Nyla tapped her foot against the platform, staring out at the tracks. She chewed on her bottom lip, oblivious to the people bustling around Xander, Edwin, and herself. The train station was much busier than she’d anticipated it would be, but that wasn’t the problem that worried her gut.

It was the anticipation of what to expect. What to expect on the train, what to expect when they got to Huntington, what to expect of Xander’s grandfather, what to expect of the near future and the days to come. That final expectation on an endless list of things she was anticipating was enough to make her pulse quicken.

She honestly didn’t expect to survive until the end of this, especially not when Dinora specifically sought to kill her. Nyla tried to tell herself that she was insignificant compared to the war Dinora promised to wage against Tenebris, but then the mousy voice inside her head reminded her that Astrid had willed her magic to someone in her bloodline—their bloodline—for a purpose.

And now that purpose had come. Astrid’s magic and whatever spell she’d designed had known now was the time it would be needed as an added strength. Nyla only wished she knew why it had chosen her, but she supposed she never would.

Having read Astrid’s journal during her brief imprisonment and in the quiet moments afforded to her by their travel, Nyla had learned more about the wars of Tenebris’s past than she ever imagined. She’d learned more about her distant ancestor and of her—their—magic than she ever thought possible.

The war, whatever you wanted to call it—the “Great Tenebris War” or the “Corvid Uprising”—hadn’t started in the way that Nyla imagined most wars did. There was no tension between the two countries at the time. Certainly, times had been difficult, and a faction of Corvids remained bitter about the previous war that had granted Tenebris and Eurland their independence from the empire, but the countries had rebuilt in the two decades following the revolution. Eurland had isolated itself, and it did not offer aid to Tenebris after Lord and Lady Hart’s assassination—more distant relatives of Nyla’s, if she’d understood Astrid’s journal entry. Corvus hadn’t offered aid either, too embroiled in their efforts to battle the furious force Dinora had manipulated in her quest for vengeance within their own country.

And so Tenebris had to face the faction of Corvid rebels alone. Or at least until the pumpkies had joined the cause several weeks after the initial battle had caught Tenebris unprepared.

Nyla had started when she’d read that. Dinora’s newfound freedom and the centuries that had passed between the Corvid Uprising had taken its toll on the kingdom’s ability to foresee such a war. She was in part to blame for this coming surprise. If they’d never gone to the Woodlane Manor, Dinora wouldn’t be free. But Nyla knew if she kept fixating on that, she’d never be able to overcome her guilt and aid whatever chances Tenebris had to stand against her and defeat her once and for all.
